29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Oct
21, 2007)
First Reading: Exodus 17:8-13, 13-14
Second Reading: Second Timothy 3:14,
4:2
Gospel: Luke 18:1-8
(Today is World Mission Sunday: We are encouraged to assist in the
mission of the Church in spreading the gospel.
Mass Readings:
First Reading: Isaiah
60:1-6, Second Reading:
Romans 10:9-18, Gospel:
Matthew 28:16-20
Reflect:
As an intrepid and
fearless missionary, Msgr. Augouard, disembarked on the coast of Gabon
on January 17, 1878, an officer said to him:
“Father, I feel sure that you won’t be able to live there.”
The African Missionary reported:
“I have not come here to live, but to die.”
An apt reply. Yes, missionaries die for Christ.
French Jesuit and oblate missionaries to the Hurons and
Iroquois of North America died between 1642 – 1649; Isaac Jogues,
priest, was tomahawked to death by Iroquois on Oct 18, 1646 near Albany;
Fr. John de Brebeuf was savagely mutilated and slain on Mar 16, 1649
near Georgian Bay; other martyrs were Antony Daniel, Gabirel Lalemant,
Charles Garnier, Noel Chabenel, and oblates Rene Goupil and Jean de la
Lande.
