Schools of St. Barnabas

With the completion of the Church, all
attention was directed toward the
establishment of a school. A two family
house opposite the Church on the South
Eastern corner of 241st Street and
Martha Avenue was secured as a convent
and Reverend Sisters Bertille, Gertrude
Marie and Agnes Marion of the Sisters of
Charity, took possession on the Feast of
the Epiphany in 1913. By February of
1913, 104 children were divided into
three grades and classes began in the
basement of the Church. Additional space
was needed almost immediately and two
classrooms and a principal's office. On
April 13, 1916, John Cardinal Farley
returned to St. Barnabas to dedicate the
new building. Over time, the original
building has undergone several major
expansions and seen its high school
students move to a new facility hat
opened in September of 1959. (To

St. Barnabas Elementary School balances the scholastic and spiritual spheres in order to set the stage for academic achievement and religious affirmation. The diligent administration and faculty nurture knowledge through a positive environment that offers supportive and challenging educational opportunities. In the spiritual sphere, children are given myriad avenues to become active participants in faith development through seasonal devotions, liturgical celebrations, reflective prayer and sacramental reception. Additionally, a diverse complement of extracurricular activities exemplifies their mission to enable children to recognize their many talents, instill a sense of confidence and broaden academic vistas.
